Most enjoyable

What an amazing regional gallery, fantastic venue recently renovated and a largely textile based collection. If you are in Ararat it is well worth the visit.

Great interesting gallery, a must see

Recently reopened after extensive renovations, Ararat Gallery TAMA now has an exhibition space dedicated to textiles as well as the original space to hold travelling exhibitions. It is now easily accessible, too, and there is a cafe opening soon.

Established in 1968, Ararat Regional Art Gallery has a unique place amongst Australia's public galleries, through its longstanding commitment to supporting and promoting textile and fibre art - a curatorial and collection focus that began in the early 1970s.The collection is located in the heart of Ararat in the historic late-Victorian Town Hall Building. The collection focuses on excellence, innovation and diversity in contemporary textile and fibre art practice, and on showcasing work of regional artists. The collection includes artworks by Juan Davila, Kate Derum, Richard Goodwin, Virginia Kaiser, Kay Lawrence, Sara Lindsay and Bronwyn Oliver, as well as international artists Olga de Amaral (Colombia) and Marcel Marois (Canada).SignificanceThe collection is dedicated to highlighting excellence, innovation and diversity in contemporary textile and fibre art practice, and to showcasing work of regional artists.Sub collectionsKey sub-collections include: Art of the Japanese Package, donated by The Japan Foundation; Lionel Lindsay prints and bookmarks, donated by Peter Lindsay; fabric prints donated by textile design pioneer Frances Burke; The Lady Barbara Grimwade Costume Collection (a survey of fashion design from 1956 to 1989) donated by Angus Kater Grimwade; and textile, fibre and leather objects from the Victorian State Craft Collection (held on long-term loan).
