Our group of Friday night diners regularly visit The Blue Duck Hotel. Its bar staff headed by Noel plus the attentive waitresses make it the friendliest of Ararat's eateries. It's winelist is comfortably the best in town with a showcase of local labels. (Try the Chockstone '17 Shiraz for a blast of cigar box richness and look for the Blue Duck Vodka.) Plastic straws have been replaced with cardboard versions and that's a huge plus. The menu is solidly aimed at a country town and tourist diner and covers steaks, fish, pastas and vegetarian dishes, all of them well presented and cooked. My solid recommendation is the Salmon Rosti. Crisp home-made rosti is covered in slivers of smoked salmon and a caper and sour cream dressing backed up with a serviceable salad. 5 STARS for the winelist and 4 STARS for the food. Give the "Duck" a once over.
